Privacy & Accessibility
I believe in privacy and accessibility as much as I am passionate about creative authenticity. With my websites, I have done my best to strike a balance between how imperfect I allow myself to be, and how visitor-accessible my sites are.
In terms of privacy, I've made my websites as uninterested in visitor information or financial revenue as I am. This includes:
- Not using tracking cookies for analytics.
- No third-party advertisements, sponsorships, corporate endorsements, or pop-ups.
- Limited visitor input, feedback, and tracking.
As a developer, I frequently work with the mindset of "I'll make this better later," so sometimes my websites are not fully accessible upon launch, or when online. At any given moment, I have either done my best or aspire to make my websites optimally:
- Work responsively for desktop, tablet, and mobile screen resolutions; or have alternative options. (See exceptions).
- Use semantic HTML as much as I am intuitively capable of.
- Allow a night-mode option for higher contrast ratios on select pages that contain large blocks of text and where visitor duration may be longer.
- Use a minimal amount of flashing animations and GIFs, and/or allow visitors to start/stop animations at will.
- Not use any audio on webpages, auto-play or otherwise.
- Use alt text as frequently and accurately as possible. (See exceptions.)
Additionally, my websites:
- Use JavaScript.
- Make simple use of iframes to convey a small amount of information between separated content.
- Do not make any use of AI-generated text, images, or content.
- Allow little to no access for AI scraping, web crawlers, and bots. I don't mind being shared or archived but I don't want my data to be commodified either.
- Do not display metrics and limit visitor interaction, because I don't want to be able to quantitatively evaluate myself or experience other side effects that prevent me from having fun.
Websites I link to consist of their own content and webmasters, which I have no interest in policing. My principles are in place as personal boundaries, and are always subject to flexibility. I do not implicitly endorse opinions and views on linked websites that are not expressly mine.
I regularly link to external websites, and sometimes in a new tab or window. If you click on a link and are unable to see a change in the webpage, be sure to check your browser's tabs or windows to see if the page has opened externally.
Though I like to talk about things that happened to me as well as the people who are and have been in my life, I do not share names of those who have not publicly interacted with me under this alias out of respect for their privacy. Additionally, I like talking about these things to reflect on how I interpreted the experience and how it impacted me. I do not seek retribution with my words.
Lastly, a good portion of the content on my websites is fannish, creative, fictional, and primarily for my own enjoyment. Though I recognize that I am responsible for what I put on the internet, I am also a big believer of all visitors having the agency to navigate away from my websites per their own levels of comfort. I wish for my websites to be accessible, but this does not mean that I intend for my content to be for everyone. Please keep this in mind when perusing.
Exceptions
Due to the way I like to design, a handful of webpages are knowingly not fully accessible, either because they are currently a work in progress, or because of the selective style of the webpage.
This includes:
- My music subsection is built with tables so its responsive appeal is limited due to that. However, its content is still readable and contains a notice when viewing on less than optimal screen sizes.
- My manifesto page makes use of an animated background for visual effects without disrupting its readability. It is also compatible with reader view as an alternative.
- As I am someone with a strong preference for pastel colors on white, some webpages may have color contrast ratios that are not considered fully accessible. However, most of these pages would not require the visitor to read for longer than a minute or so. Sites requiring visitors to read at length have a night mode option with a higher contrast ratio.
- I do not use "Skip to Main Content" for screenreaders, as most of my websites differ too vastly in design or do not consist of a lot of text to be read or skipped. Projects that do will have it implemented eventually.
- I design through and for computers wherein mouse-hovering is the norm, so while most of my designs may be responsive, they are generally best suited for a mouse-and-screen interface.
- Making designs responsive is a bit of a chore for me, so sometimes I launch a project before designing it responsively. I intend for them to be responsive eventually, but in my own time.
- Some pages may not be responsive due to their intent and function (e.g. desk, timeline.)
- Archived projects are incomplete, so they may not be fully responsive.
- Additional projects may contain their own warnings regarding accessibility.
For over a decade and a half in my webdesign hobby, adding alt text to images was not a practice I frequented. I am doing my best to improve this habit and provide accurate alt text on both past and present/future projects. I appreciate your patience in the meantime.
Policies & Licenses
I have been hesitant to apply official licenses to my creative works because I do not like involving the law or money in the realm of what I consider to be art. However, out of necessity, the following policies apply to my works:
- Written Content:
Creative Commons License: Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International
- You can copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format.
- You can remix, transform, and build upon the material. However, permissively I'd personally prefer to be asked if you intend to create podfic or a written remix of any of my works.
- If you redistribute or remix my works, you must reasonably:
- Give appropriate attribution ("aroceu", or how I credit myself on the original work. Pseudonyms include host domains, e.g. "three-apples.org". If no name or original domain is provided, you may assume anonymity.)
- Indicate if changes were made.
- Not imply that I endorse you or the work.
- Release the works under the same (or no) license.
- Any redistribution, copy, or transformation of my freely written work cannot be used for commercial purposes.
- You can do whatever you want with my work. This applies to my code, design, aesthetics, graphics, and other creative works, provided it is not written content.
- Though I considered the GNU General Public License and the Anti-Capitalist Software License, ultimately I believe in the shared space of creativity and I do not believe in censorship. I do not want to control what other people do, particularly if it contributes to others' ability to learn or improve their lives.
- Everything I do and make on the internet will always be for free and as open source as I allow. While I myself am anti-capitalist and prefer not to associate with people I consider to have opposing principles, more importantly I do not want to involve myself in other people's business or weaponize the law against other civilians in any way, even as a hyperbolic threat.
Additionally:
- If you take my work and: modify it, do not credit me, redistribute it, or use it for commercial gain (with the exception of written works), I will not track you down or take you to court. I will not call the cops on you. I will not involve the legal system, nor will I claim that your use of my work is denying me of any financial gain.
- However, in the same vein where I permit you to do what the fuck you want, I am also permitted to do what I want, in the sense that: I will think and feel what I want, I may discuss my perspective in private and public forums, I may tell or warn others if I feel that I have been wronged, and I may block, confront, or raise ethical concerns to distribution platforms if I find it necessary. This also pertains to my written works.
Disclaimers & Credits
I am not making any money off of my websites nor do I ever intend to. It's a hobby, not a job for me.
My websites are hand-coded by me as much as possible. Exceptions to this include websites that run on content management systems, which are credited in the specific project.
The notebook background pattern I use frequently, such as on /me, /log, and kingdra.net, is by
Sarah Backhouse from the CSS3 Patterns Gallery.
The pixel graphics found on my main index, Masterball, and the Fandom Webring linking to variety of trans advocacy websites are by Azure of Tricky Fox cliques. The images are linked for the uninformed, but generally speaking, I have them to indicate that my sites - and my individual presence - will always be safe for trans and non-cis people.
Thank you to Lysianthus for hosting me since 2021, and Clover, among others, for being an endless source of inspiration.
