The way I engage with fanworks made by others is largely through fic, just as much as I primarily write fic in fandom for others to engage with me. This is a list of my preferences in fanworks by others, in things I would like to receive, some more negative opinions, and, broadly, what I like to read the most. However, despite my preferences I am still pretty inclined to read anything.
While I’m mostly fic-focused, I’ve listed at the top here other types of fanworks I greatly enjoy perceiving or receiving. Spoiler: it’s all fanart based.
Favorite mediums:
- Fanfiction
- Fanart, comics, animations
- Fanart for my fanfiction
Tropes I like – a lot of this mostly applies to shippy fanfiction, though I do like gen:
- Unexpected transformations, particularly into a child or into an animal, where characters have to take care of them and in doing so, become more honest about their feelings towards their love interest, who may or may not be said transformed being. (If not, the, of course, the transformed being helps them get close/admit their feelings for each other.)
- General animal care and child-care.
- Canon play or exploration; post-canon; pre-canon; a lot of the times I’m into a fandom because I like and respect the canon a lot, and I like to see ways other writers do the same through their fic.
- Post-canon fix-it, canon divergence, unexpected pre-canon.
- Worldbuilding, mystery, larger than life elements of the story even if it takes place in “our” world. Basically, making the setting feel both grounded and expansive.
- Roleswap/mirrorverse, as in, the positions of at least the main characters are switched in terms of narrative position but not necessarily personality.
- Casual domesticity between two people who don’t realize how incredibly obvious and domestic it is (or they do but still don’t think the other would reciprocate, for some reason)
- Character who knows his queerness x character who discovers his queerness through the other but desperately doesn’t want to be “homophobic” beforehand
- Mutual pining, pining while fucking, obliviously seeming one-sided pining.
- Secret very long-term pining that is thought to never amount to anything, except after some time the love interest is incredibly into them. Both of them think the other could never like them back, and the long-term piner continues to try to get over them.
- Enemies to lovers, enemies to friends to lovers, enemies to enemies with benefits to friend with benefits to lovers, whatever. Characters who see each other at their worst from the beginning and dislike each other for it and have to grow to learn to like each other as well. Sometimes with sex involved.
- Best friends to enemies to [whatever else] to lovers
- Hurt/comfort, hospitalfic, we’re stuck in this situation together and have to depend on each other.
- Secret/forbidden relationships, fake relationships, arranged relationships, always with sex involved and complicating things further.
- Mpreg in a domestic and/or needing to be responsible way. Teenage pregnancy, knowing/not knowing if a kid is his and being involved, as a vehicle for other types of relationship play (see above).
- Class difference; down on their luck x luckily privileged; coming from different material worlds of poverty and comfort.
- Satire, parody, comedy.
- Vampires, werewolves, some sort of non-human animalistic element that tests the not-quite-human’s control while their love interest also animalistically wants them to lose control.
- Plot/mystery/heists with romance on the side
- Fairy tales
- Pianos
- Genderswap-to-femslash with main pairing, other characters’ genders are dealer’s choice.
- Oh shit it’s you again and you got hot
- Fist fights, throwing a punch, men taking out their own strong emotions about each other in a physically violent way.
- Matchmaking, falling in love seemingly under an influence, usually in a light-hearted way.
- Comedy of errors, hidden identity, indirect communication through notes/the internet, secret admirer/gift giving.
- Sports/competition as a main plot driver, competitive relationships as a metaphor or vehicle for romance.
- Silly, tropey, cliche situations played straight where characters still act in a realistic human way despite the ridiculous situations.
- Crossovers, crossover fusion, world-based crossovers, story-/character-based crossovers either for comedy or played straight. Whacky crossovers taken seriously. Crossover fusions that can be integrated with canon (e.g. LOST AU, pacific rim au…)
- Canon AU, as in an AU that is relevant or technically “canon” within the canon, e.g. a band’s music video, attempt #218 in the Good Place, Future Fish for Free, Haikyuu Quest
- School, academia, high school, university; basically some sort of expected structured lifestyle for young people under the guise of education when most of the time they’re thinking about their social lives.
- Amnesia, time travel, parallel universes, mystery.
- Selfcest
- Cracky (or not) fandom AU
- In m/m fic where a member of the ship canonically has a girlfriend, said girlfriend is made to be a lesbian in the fic
Sex things I like
- Virginity / secret virgin. Doesn’t have to be both of them, it just adds a little oomph to the sexual part of the relationship in the fic.
- Omegaverse, heat/mating cycles, knotting, breeding kink, mpreg
- Getting turned on by fear (see vampire/werewolf mention from earlier), violence as a prelude to sex, uncontainable animalistic lust.
- Sex pollen / dubcon situations (not necessarily inflicted by a relevant character)
- Guilt-driven sex, secrecy-ridden sex. Infidelity-based sex, where my ship is not cheating on each other, but rather different partners with each other.
- Power exploration / trust testing
- Begging
- Barebacking/creampies I want condoms to have narrative purpose ONLY!!!!!!! Also, felching and snowballing.
- Outdoor, enclosed spaces, semi-public
- Exhibitionism/voyeurism, one-sided voyeurism
- Size obsession
- Lifestyle D/s or BDSM, spanking, pet play, safeword angst
- Collaring, choking
- Clothed sex
- Semi-public sex, toys/pleasure control
- Feminine clothing except for makeup or bras
- Pegging, fingering
- Cunnilingus, rimming
- Face-sitting
- Cockwarming
- Bruises, biting, nail scratching, marking, hickies
- Overstimulation
- Finger sucking, fingering alongside rimming, fingering someone’s mouth while kissing them (or not), fingering while giving head, adding a finger during phallic penetration.
- Hair pulling
- Waking up to have sex
- Spooning (sexual or otherwise)
- Netflix & chill – characters are/supposed to be watching something but having sex or making out instead (semi-public inclusive)
- Dry orgasms
- Hotel sex, car sex, couch/table/furniture/bathtub sex
- Being loud while having sex
- Size queen bottoms
Things I don’t want/like
- Deliberation over the minutiae of sexuality labels
- Writing style/character stuff: epithets, mouthpiece dialogue moments, use of insignificant words in a different language in text when characters are not expected to be speaking English in the fic in the first place, non-canon petnames and nicknames
- Cultural stuff: changing characters’ canon eye color, changing non-white characters’ race, over-reliance on American-based Christianity for plots with non-American characters
- War (if not canon or relevant to canon)
- Cops
- Terminal illness
Other notes
- I’m generally pretty open to anything, as long as it’s executed well. Of course, I know this is subjective and up to my judgment at any time. But I’m a huge proponent of trying anything once; in fiction, there is very little I dislike on principle.
